Texas Hold’em has quickly become a staple on TV, in casinos, and in living rooms around the country.

You must know how to play, and how to play well. Whether you want to beat your friends in a friendly home game, or make some money playing online or at a brick and mortar casino, or compete in a tournament, the following tips will show you how you can begin a journey which can be fun and rewarding.

You can begin by…

PLAYING FOR FREE

Admittedly, playing poker free without anything at stake is usually boring and unrewarding.

However, the majority of online poker sites still offer the option to play poker using free money. Anyone who opens an account receives a small sum of play money he or she can use at the play money tables. There they can play in the same manner that the real money tables use.

Now clearly the level of competition and the quality of the strategies are not those you will usually find at a real money table. That is not to say that the free tables are not without purpose. Since the site will keep records of the amount of free money you win, there will be a steady increase in the level of play as you start entering into tables where the stakes are higher. For instance, if you were to start out with 1,000 dollars and slowly work your way up to a sum of 20,000 dollars, allowing you to enter into tournaments where the buy-in is 3,000 and up, then you would be playing against higher caliber opponents. As a result online poker for free does have its own level of competition and depth.

When you have mastered the play money tables, you can then begin playing at the real money tables. Take the time to play for free and think of the decisive advantages it presents:

1. Gain a knowledge of the best starting hands in Texas Hold em.

2. You learned to harness the power of position at the poker table.

3. You have grown in your understanding of betting and the various betting strategies

4. Grasped the ability to speak poker slang without looking like an idiot at the tables.

5. You understand there is a proper code of conduct known as poker etiquette.

So what are you waiting on? Do a search on online poker reviews and find the poker-client that best suits your needs. While you begin learning to play poker for free, you should…

BUY THE BEST POKER BOOKS

A large number of poker players find their introduction to the game of Texas Holdem through some of the best poker books.

With Texas Hold’em experiencing such a rapid growth in the past several years, there are more poker books than ever before, however you want in your possession the best poker books. Read poker book reviews and find the top poker books especially for beginning poker players. However, take the time to search the Internet for information on how to play poker and the different Texas Hold em starting hands before starting out.

Good poker books can help you improve techniques to your game that you may have not known or have ignored. You also might find that during a bad poker run, re-reading your favorite poker book can help you return to the essentials and point out some probable weaknesses in your game.

Do yourself a favor and read nothing but the best poker books that will help you to learn how to play poker. Now there is one other tip you should utilize if you want to learn how to play…

FIND A POKER COACH

If you are serious about learning to play poker and wanting to win money, you should consider a poker coach. You are aware every professional athlete has a “go to person.”

Hank Haney tutors the prolific Tiger Woods to keep him in check and perfect his swing. Heck, even Michael Jordan himself had a mentor. Every paid athlete regardless of the sport has a tutor or a trainer to maintain his or her discipline… Always helping with strategy and perfecting the game.

Poker is a people game and coaching is a people thing. A poker coach can see what you are doing wrong and immediately correct you. That is hard and perhaps impossible to do on your own.

If you’re serious about playing poker then you should take playing poker serious enough to find a good poker coach. Having someone to critique your play may save your bankroll down the road.

Learning to play poker takes a minute to learn and a life-time to master. With the aforementioned tips it will make learning to play easier. Good luck at the tables.

Let’s learn some different type of poker other than Texas holdem, 7 card stud, 5 card draw and Omaha. Yes, pai gow poker. Now you must be wondering that pai gow sounds little Chinese; yes you are right this game is a mixture of the Chinese game pai gow and our very own American poker. Definitely this is not one of the most popular forms of poker but still widely played. It can be played by up to seven players.

It is played with one deck of 52 cards, plus a joker. Interestingly, joker can be used only as an ace, or to complete a straight, a flush, a straight flush, or a royal flush. The important thing here to remember is other than the usual ranking of hands we have one more winning hand that is “Five Aces” (five aces including the joker). Surprisingly, five aces beat all other hands including royal flush.

Each player is dealt seven cards. The cards are arranged to make two hands; a two card hand and a five card hand. The five card hand must rank higher or be equal to the two card hand. Finally both of your hands must rank higher than both of your opponents hands (both five and two card hands). Further the two card hand can only have two combinations; one pair and high card.

After the cards are arranged in to two hands, they are placed on the table face down. Once you put them down, you can no longer touch them. The dealer will turn over his cards and make his hands. Each players hand is compared to the dealer’s hands. If the player wins one hand and loses the other, this is known as “push” and no money is exchanged. If dealer wins both hands then he/she wins the players stake and vice versa. Now what if there is a tie, the only advantage with the dealer here is he/she wins all ties.

After the hand is played, the next person clock-wise becomes the dealer and the next hand is played. The major disadvantage to this game is that there is no skill involved and you rely too much on luck. Also the odds are poor compared to playing with a pot.

All the games we have looked so far involved betting against other players. But this game is different; here everyone plays against the casino or room which acts as a bank (dealer), paying out all winning bets. To win you have to beat the dealer’s hand, other player’s hands don’t make a difference.

First each player makes an ante (initial blind bet) and is dealt 5 cards face down. The dealer receives 4 cards face down and 1 card face up. Now each player decides whether to fold or play by looking at their cards, if they fold then their ante is lost but if they continue, they have to double their ante-bet.

Now the dealer reveals his hand, but he must have an A-k or higher in order to play his hand, if not the player is paid even money on the ante and also the additional bet is not lost (See the table for odds). If the player’s hand beats the dealer’s, the ante is paid at evens. However, if the dealer’s hand beats the player’s hand then both bets are lost.

Additional Bet Payout odds:

One pair or High card	—>	1/1 (Even)
Two pair	—> 2/1
Three of a kind —> 3/1
Straight	—> 4/1
Flush —> 5/1
Full House	—> 7/1
Four of a kind —> 20/1
Straight flush	—> 50/1
Royal flush	—> 100/1

If the dealer and player play the same poker hand, then remaining cards are taken in to consideration. If all five cards are equal, the hand is void. Neither the ante nor the additional bet is lost. The ranking of suits makes no difference to the hand.

Here the odds are poor; a normal game of poker with seven players will have odds of at least 6/1 which is a great deal better when compared to the minimum odds in this game which is 1/1. Also the odds paid for additional bet are poor. Again there is no skill required and you rely too much on luck. Finally remember you have much better odds of winning money when you are playing for the pot. Good Luck

At most online casinos, you can indulge yourself in a range of games, including Blackjack, roulette, and poker. So do you know how to play poker? Or where it came from? Poker is one of those gambling games that have lot of history behind it.

Poker is one of the world’s most popular games and is played by professional and amateurs alike at home and in casinos. Traditionally, it was played in card houses and gambling joints. Today, it is played a lot on the Internet.

Poker involves strategy, bluffing and a little luck. It is a game in which players bet that they are holding the highest hand. Another interesting feature of poker is that players play each other and not the house, in a game.

The name ‘Poker’ by itself has no antecedents. There are poker myths that speak of author Jonathan H Green coining the word after watching a card game. Today, millions of people all over the game play the game, and millions of dollars are bet in the process.

Believed to have originated in Asia, poker became popular in the US during the 1830s in the southern states. One school of thought says the game originated as a Persian card game called As Nas, as there are numerous similarities between the two. However, As Nas was played with 25 cards with 5 different suits.

The modern version of the game is believed to have originated in New Orleans. The game spread to all other parts of the US via the railroad. The frontier towns of the Wild West were a natural breeding ground for the game and it attracted travelers and speculators alike.

It those early days, the game was played by people of dubious distinction, either for entertainment or purely for the purpose of making money. The game appealed to the risk-taking traits of the early inhabitants of the West. Fortunes were often made or lost during card games in the early days, and ever so often, lives were lost when card games went wrong.

Those days of card sharks and shoot-outs have gone by and poker has progressed to become a game played by people from all walks of life. Today, it is a game that is also played purely for fun and loved by everyone including children and elderly people. There are professionals as well as amateurs involved in the game today. In fact, there are professional poker players who are stars in their own right.

About the game, although there are many variations to the game and strategies differ from game to game, the order of the winning cards remains the same. A large number of the game’s variation’s are played with the 52 card deck. The cards are ranked according to the number on the face of the card, in the following order: ace, king, queen, jack, 10, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2.
In spite of being the highest ranking card, the ace can also substitute for the lowest ranking card. In some games, a wild card is declared and this card can substitute for any of the other cards. The numbers and faces of the cards are again differentiated as clubs, diamond, spades and hearts.

With all this information, including background and basics, you would have realized that poker is indeed a fascinating game, and that it only takes a little of your time to learn the basics. But that will be enough for you to start playing the game. Take a little time off to discover poker and get hooked for life.

Did you know that you might be paying up to $10,000 rake each month playing online poker, over and over again? I knew I paid rake while I played but not that it could be this much! The most fantastic thing is I was able to get back up to 50% of this amount each month! This is something I didn’t have a clue about until I found out about something called rakeback. Then what does this strange word rakeback mean?

“Rebate/repayment to a player of a portion the rake paid by the player, normally from a non-cardroom, third-party source such as an affiliate.”

I’m not a professional poker player and I don’t play much either but with 30% rakeback I made over $300 my first week playing online poker, all I did was playing $200 No-Limit a few hours each day!

30% rakeback means that I get back 30% of all rake I’ve paid. Rake is a fee taken by the house. This fee is usually 2-4% of the total pot, to a maximum of $3.

Signing up for a rakeback deal didn’t take me more then a few minutes, and best of all! It didn’t cost me anything.

For a more in depth examination of rakeback and rakeback deals.

Learn the most important tricks to bluffing. Learn when to bluff, when not to bluff and even when to bluff that you are bluffing.

Bluffing in Poker and particularly in Texas Holdem is a very useful tool, but if it is not used properly it can be a very dangerous tool to try and use. If used right bluffing can give you the appearance of having a good hand when you have nothing and scare the other players into folding their hands, but if it is not done right then all that happens is that you lose some money.

1) Check to see that the group of players playing for the pot is small. The biggest reason why you should do this is that it is easier to fool a small group than a large one. Another viable problem is that if the players are many, some might simply be dumb and not fully understand the true extent of your bluff. Whatever the case you have to take into consideration that a large group is tougher to bluff. Do not argue. It is simply so.

2) Do not bluff if your hand is weaker than a pair and to be on the safe side, better to have at least two pairs even if these are weak. Note that a player or two will remain in the game even if they have no hand whatsoever. They hope to learn how others play so that they will be able to beat them in later rounds. Such players can be caused to fold if you bluff well. Other than that, always take into consideration that some player will always remaining thinking you are bluffing. So, at least have a good enough hand to beat them.

2) Do not bluff with nothing. Bluffing should be used to make a weak hand look better but not to try to make nothing look like something. Bluffing should only be done if you hold at least one pair. Some players will not back down from your bluff especially in the beginning of the game. They are trying to feel you out and see how you react in different situations. To fool them you are going to have to become a good actor.

d) If you win a round of betting and the other Texas holdem players see that you did it with a big hand, then for the next few rounds you are at a big advantage. The memory of your high-value Texas Holdem sequence will linger in your opponents’ minds and this will help you tremendously if you bluff. Each other player will think twice before challenging your hand.

e) Since you are playing Texas Holdem, pay attention to the cards that the dealers places face-up on the poker table. If you find that the cards down make up a weak pair, then start bluffing. Others will think you have the card to make up a triple, and will back off in fright.

6) Pay attention to how the other players at your table but and what their hands are at the end. Poker players who only bet when they have strong hands are the easiest to beat. All you have to do is wait till they are not betting and you know they have a weak hand so if you push them they will fold for fear of losing any more money on a bad hand.

Closure:
Bluffing is not very different than lying on a test or to friends. If you are a good liar, you will be able to bluff with a lot more confidence than others. But you need to reduce the amount you lie because whereas in life people tend to believe you, in Texas Hold’em, players tend not to believe you.

Gaming, poker and roulette have a very unique history in American society. When most of think about gaming and history we might conjure up ideas of the Old West, Cowboys and dingy bars. Like everything else in history gaming has progressed in terms of supplies, customization and improved products. It doesn’t matter if you are having a few friends over for a friendly game of poker or you are a gaming industry because there are new products available for you.

Let us say that you desire to set up a nice little poker table in your finished basement or that you are attempting to revamp a casino. Even though the choices of products can be endless you may find services to be disjointed, having little ability to customize and multiple places to purchase all of your supplies. What if you could buy poker chips, pokers tables, poker table tops, custom chips, dining top tables, different color felts, high quality poker furniture, and just about anything else related to the poker game at a single place? You would be able to save time purchasing from this single source and money by purchasing all of your products from a single source.

Dealing a poker game is more then simply shoving some cards across the table at your guests it is about style, image and quality. If you don’t have these essential elements of a good game few people will be able to engage themselves deeply in the entertainment experiences. For example, how long will someone play a game of poker if his or her back hurts from a poor chair or they have no place to put their feet? Having the proper equipment will affect how long people stay, how much money they spend, whether they enjoyed the game and whether or not they will come back.

The proper equipment doesn’t need to cost you tens of thousands of dollars. The American Gaming Supply at AmericanGamingSupply dot com offers just about everything you would ever want in their large selection of roulette tables, poker tables and craps tables. They even have customizable poker chips as well as standard poker chips.

After one more year Thorp published a book (I mentioned it at the beginning of the article) in which he rather in details, in the form comprehensible to any even a slightly literate and sensible person, set the rules of formation of a winning strategy. But the publication of the book did not only cause a quick growth of those willing to enrich themselves at the cost of gambling houses’ owners, as well as allowed the latter ones to understand the main reason of effectiveness of the developed by Thorp strategy.

First of all, casinos’ owners understood at last that it was necessary to introduce the following obligatory point into the rules of the game: cards are to be thoroughly shuffled after each game! If this rule is rigorously observed, then a winning strategy of Thorp cannot be applied, since the calculation of probabilities of extracting one or another card from a pack was based on the knowledge of the fact that some cards would already not appear in the game!

But what does it mean to have “thoroughly shuffled” cards? Usually in gambling houses the process of “thoroughly shuffling” presupposes the process when a croupier, one of the gamblers or, that is still oftener seen of late, a special automatic device makes a certain number of more or less monotonous movements with a pack (the number of which varies from 10 to 20-25, as a rule). Each of these movements changes the arrangement of cards in a pack. As mathematicians say, as a result of each movement with cards a kind of “substitution” is made. But is it really so that as a result of such 10-25 movements a pack is thoroughly shuffled, and in particular, if there are 52 cards in a pack then a probability of the fact that, for instance, an upper card will appear to be a queen will be equal to 1/13? In other words, if we will, thus, for example, shuffle cards 130 times, then the quality of our shuffling will turn out to be more “thorough” if the number of times of the queen’s appearance on top out of these 130 times will be closer to 10.

Strictly mathematically it is possible to prove that in case our movements appear to be exactly similar (monotonous) then such a method of shuffling cards is not satisfactory. At this it is still worse if the so called “order of substitution” is less, i.e. less is the number of these movements (substitutions) after which the cards are located in the same order they were from the start of a pack shuffling. In fact, if this number equals to t, then repeating exactly similar movements any number of times we, for all our wish, can not get more different positioning of cards in a pack, or, using mathematical terms, not more t different combinations of cards.

Certainly, in reality, shuffling of cards does not come down to recurrence of the same movements. But even if we assume that a shuffling person (or an automatic device) makes casual movements at which there can appear with a certain probability all possible arrangements of cards in a pack at each single movement, the question of “quality” of such mixing turns out to be far from simple. This question is especially interesting from the practical point of view that the majority of notorious crooked gamblers achieve phenomenal success using the circumstance, that seemingly “careful shuffling” of cards actually is not such!

Mathematics helps to clear a situation with regard to this issue as well. In the work “Gambling and Probability Theory” A.Reni presents mathematical calculations allowing him to draw the following practical conclusion: “If all movements of a shuffling person are casual, so, basically, while shuffling a pack there can be any substitution of cards, and if the number of such movements is large enough, reasonably it is possible to consider a pack “carefully reshuffled”. Analyzing these words, it is possible to notice, that, firstly, the conclusion about “quality” of shuffling has an essentially likelihood character (”reasonably”), and, secondly, that the number of movements should be rather large (A.Reni prefers not to consider a question of what is understood as “rather a large number”). It is clear, however, that the necessary number at least a sequence higher than those 10-25 movements usually applied in a real game situation. Besides, it is not that simple “to test” movements of a shuffling person (let alone the automatic device) for “accidence”!

Summing it all up, let’s come back to a question which has been the headline of the article. Certainly, it would be reckless to think that knowledge of maths can help a gambler work out a winning strategy even in such an easy game like twenty-one. Thorp succeeded in doing it only by using imperfection (temporary!) of the then used rules. We can also point out that one shouldn’t expect that maths will be able to provide a gambler at least with a nonlosing strategy. But on the other hand, understanding of mathematical aspects connected with gambling games will undoubtedly help a gambler to avoid the most unprofitable situations, in particular, not to become a victim of fraud as it takes place with the problem of “cards shuffling”, for example. Apart from that, an impossibility of creation of a winning strategy for all “cases” not in the least prevents “a mathematically advanced” gambler to choose whenever possible “the best” decision in each particular game situation and within the bounds allowed by “Dame Fortune” not only to enjoy the very process of the Game, as well as its result.

A complex nature of poker generated in poker community a discussion on what dominates in this casino game: skills or success. Most of the people believe that poker is a casino game the outcome of which depends on skills of a casino player and only a small probability is given to a chance. This thesis is confirmed by facts. For instance, legendary poker players have won WSOP poker championship for many times independently on a number of participants. Thus, Johnny Moss has triply become a poker champion (in 1970, 1971 and 1974), a three-time poker champion is the greatest player of the 20th century Stew Ungar, he won WSOP in 1980, 1981 and 1997. Doyle Brunson and Johnny Chen have twice tried on Gold WSOP winner bracelets. In poker as in any other kind of sports there is an elite of poker players who win great tournaments every year or take prize places. Just sport compound of poker let make poker player rating, every year the first places are occupied there by the poker the casino and poker rooms community.

As to the opinion of the states on the nature of poker, here everything’s more complicated and sophisticated. As a rule, in many countries the authorities don’t make any difference between gambling games and poker. However such a fuddy-duddy approach has recently tried to break the poker community. Poker and casino games fans unite themselves in associations, public entities trying to prove to the officials that poker can not be put together with roulette or slot machines.

Sometimes the authorities themselves understand that. For instance, in the United States poker can be played not only in casinos but in special card rooms the activity of which is allowed only on the territory of the states where gambling business is prohibited. Thus, on the territory of California successfully work 91 card rooms, in Florida 16, in Washington 112, the state of Montana counts even 493 card rooms. The income of American card rooms (not including casinos) in 2006 made more than 1 milliard dollars. The activity of these organizations are severely controlled by the government. For instance, the legislation of Florida fully regulates the rate of the stakes in poker. This year in June got effect the law according to which the stakes in limited poker games are allowed to be increased from 2 to 5 dollars, in unlimited Texas Hold’em maximum allowed rate of buy-in makes 100 dollars.

However these states are predominantly exceptions. Unfortunately poker for most of American officials is a gamble. For most of them but not for everybody. In June 2007 a congressman Robert Wexler introduced to the House of representatives of the USA a draft law named “Skill Game Protection Act”. According to this draft law such games as poker, bridge, chess should not fall within the scope of the law because on the author’s mind they are games where skills dominate over a chance. A very serious political force acting on the side of poker is a senator Alfonse D’Amato who together with the organization “Poker Players Alliance” fights for a fair and objective attitude of the authorities to the favourite game.

But if in the USA the process of poker recognition as a skill game has just begun in some other countries poker scored off the conservatism of the officials.

The first considerable victory was marked in Austria. In 1993 an entrepreneur and a great fun of poker Peter Zanoni opened in Vienna a poker club “Concord Card Casino”. The club positioned itself as the place where they play only poker as a skill game not a gambling game. Substantially immediately the club became interesting for the gambling business which saw a competitor therein. At the suggestion of the gambling business the press began attacking the club, the managers of the club were accused in organization of illegal gambling games, contacts with criminals etc.

Very soon gambling lobby provoked the state to bring a charge in organization of illegal gambles against the managers of the club. The court took place the resolution of which shocked many people. The advocates of the club tried to prove that poker is not a gamble but a competition of skills, know-how. The court applied for consultation of the experts, they carried out an independent mathematical expertise of poker rules the results of which expressly showed that skills dominated over a chance in this game. Poker was brought into the line with chess. The court accepted the results of the expertise and took the resolution in favor of the poker club. For today the “Concord Card Casino” is one of the greatest poker clubs of Europe. The founder of the club Peter Zanoni inspired with his victory, he is now successfully working on popularization of poker and its recognition as a kind of sport in Europe. For this purpose he founded first Austrian association of poker sport and in 2006 he founded European association of poker sport.

A similar court session took place in Great Britain in January 2007. Derek Kelly faced trial, he is an owner of a poker club “Gutshot Club” in London downtown. Unfortunately for Derek and all English poker fans British law turned to be less liberal than Austrian one. Having recognized a skill compound in poker games it gave preference to a chance in the game. But British people should not be upset the attitude to skill sports in their country is still complicated, for instance, chess was officially recognized a sport only some years ago. Derek Kelly’s case had provoked in society a live discussion which was taken up by politicians. Very soon British media suggest that poker, bridge should be put together with chess.

In the end of July 2007 good news for poker fans came from Denmark. Court proceedings as to Frederic Hostrup, a chairman of Danish poker association finished in favor of Frederic and poker. As in Austria Hostrup was accused in organization of illegal gambling games. The advocate Henrick Hoffman proved to the court that poker is not a gamble but a skill game. The winners have already declared that now they will fight for the rights of their favourite game on the territory of all Europe.

Poker smoothly fitted well into the society of the 20th century and a number of their fans grow in geometrical progression. In the modern world not to know how to play poker becomes a mauvais ton. In such conditions the authorities cannot but take into account the people’s opinion which is the part of it. The authorities should go away from prejudices and be guided by common sense and the opinion of majority.
